Abstract

Taking its cue from Francesco Rosi's two famous feature films ‘La sfida’ (1958) and ‘Le mani sulla città’ (1963), the essay focuses on a number of images that are intended to stop and analyse post-World War II Naples, the city in which Stefania Filo Speziale (1905 - 1988) was the protagonist. Two of the architect's works stand out in the two films, namely the palazzine in Via Nevio (1954-58) and the skyscraper of the Società Cattolica Assicurazioni (1954-58). ‘Le mani sulla città’ has become a way of defining a period, that of the building boom. Rereading the works of Stefania Filo Speziale and its history can perhaps help us look at it in a different way.
