Abstract

This article presents a critical reading of the development of the city of Munich from late medieval time to post-WWII recovery through iconographic sources. A focus on illustrations showing the city in elevation is given. The recurring theme of the representation of the bell towers of the Fraunkirche over different eras is debated in details. The dichotomy between sign and image is also presented aiming at clarify our understanding of these representations as reference points. Strategies for the post-WWII recovery are presented by using the illustrative case of the Alte Pinakothek.
