Italian cities and the government of tourism in the early 50s of the twentieth century.
In the early 50s, Italy had emerged from the difficult years of post-war reconstruction, and tourism was rapidly recovering. The Country inherited the institutional framework established by the fascist government in the 1930s, which had created a network of provincial tourist boards, the EPTs, that served as the exclusive and privileged intermediaries between local administrations, private stakeholders and the central government.
In democratic Italy, cities that had a long-standing tourism tradition, such as Rome, Venice, Abano Terme or Sanremo, hoped to regain autonomy from the central government and from this institutional apparatus. However, the tourist services across Italian cities varied widely in quality and development and therefore required different policies.
The article examines the projects and aspirations of several Italian tourist cities in the early 50s an analysis of printed and archival sources.
