Through a synthesis of research already published, this account outlines the development, the “vocations” and the crisis experienced by Pithekoussai within the structure of relations, mobility and exchanges occurring in the area of the central-
western Mediterranean from at least the first half of the 9th century BC. The first section is dedicated to investigating the
network of relations linking Campania to Sicily, Sardinia, the Iberian Peninsula and to North Africa. The second more closely enquires into the foundation of Pithekoussai, around the middle of the 8th century BC, placing the event within the broader dynamic of similar colonial foundation processes, which at that same time are taking place in the western Mediterranean under Phoenician impetus and with the consent of local communities.
