Abstract

Between 1896 and 1897, Croce developed his own Labriolian Marxism and defended the theory of surplus value, saying that it highlights a “fact” through an “elliptical comparison” and is a “dart” thrown at capitalism. According to Croce, Böhm-Bawerk is unable to counter Marx’s “dart”. Marx’s “dart”, as conceived by Croce, implies the idea of “neutral” plus developed in 1960 by Piero Sraffa. This idea makes it possible to interpret Marx’s “dart” in a way that frees it from its dependence on the theory: “value = living labour”. The essence of the “dart” is identified in “appropriated” capital, i.e. in the “autonomy” of capital. Conceived in this way, Marx’s “dart” seems to strike not only (I) industrial capitalism, but also (II) today’s usurious techno-finance capitalism, in which God-capital is increasingly autonomous thanks to the progressive expulsion of “living” labour from production processes, i.e. thanks to the replacement of humans with increasingly intelligent machines.
