Abstract

The present contribution delves into the phenomenon of dark tourism, examining it in conjunction with industrial tourism as the overarching category for analysing disaster tourism associated with nuclear landscapes. The concept of nuclear landscapes as a heritage of trauma and post-apocalyptic heritage is widely understood. However, the notion of these landscapes as a dissonant heritage is gaining traction due to the ongoing processes of patrimonialization that often have opposite sign. The reference to the four most renowned destinations for disaster tourism -Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukushima, and Chernobyl- facilitates an analysis of the heritage preserved and offered to visitors. It also explores how these sites recount and reconstruct the traumatic events suffered by the communities.
