The geography of salt trade in Ragusa in the late Middle Ages

The article reconstructs the geography of Ragusa's (Dubrovnik) salt trade in the 14th century, based on approximately 130 notarial contracts (1345–1415) and the deliberations of the city councils. It analyzes the sources of supply and the destinations of the salt shipments, illustrating the relationship between local production, private imports, and re-exports towards the Balkan hinterland. The first part examines the evolution of the salt policy: from a rigid Venetian-style monopoly at the beginning of the 14th century to a more flexible regime, which allowed private merchants to import, store, and trade salt under strict public control. The second part shows the broad and diversified supply area. The main areas of origin included Dalmatia (Zara-Pag), the Albanian coast (Valona, Durazzo), Puglia (Brindisi, Manfredonia), and, growing towards the end of the century, the Ionian Islands (Romania). The salt cargoes often did not have Ragusa as their destination, but were intended for transit and immediate re-export towards the fluvial hubs that served as a hinge with the Slavic hinterland. Specifically, most of the cargoes were shipped to the Narenta River and, to a lesser extent, the Bojana River area.
