Abstract

Starting from what the criticism usually considers as a neologism of César Vallejo, “horrísima”, the paper shows that the word circulates in fact in epic texts – since Luis de Camões’s Os Lusiadas (1572) and its Castilian reception. The word is specially used by authors of romanticism, before falling, progressively, in disuse, so that it could be considered a neologism when Vallejo uses it in 1938, subjecting it to a slight semantic variation.
