Abstract

The paper provides an overview of the book Introduction à la sociologie médiévale by Alexis Fontbonne, which offers a distinctive interpretation of medieval society through key concepts of sociology while simultaneously tracing the medieval roots of those very concepts. The volume, with its stronger focus on the ecclesiastical sphere, is discussed here from an urban perspective, exploring the theme of civic associations ‒ such as confraternities and guilds ‒ as driving forces of urban development.
