Abstract

The section takes Patrick J. Geary’s book on the contribution of genetics to the history of the Early Middle Ages as the starting point for a dialogue between historical, archaeological, and archaeogenetic perspectives. The contributions discuss the possibilities and limits of integrating genetic data, material culture, and written sources, with particular attention to migration, population composition, ethnicity, and processes of integration. The resulting picture shows how new data can expand the scope of historical research without replacing its methods and interpretative tools.
