Abstract

The Stazione Zoologica, founded by Anton Dohrn at Naples in 1872, was the first international institute for research in marine biology. Dohrn well used local assets such as the great number of tourists as potential visitors to the aquarium and the rich marine fauna and flora in the Gulf of Naples as potential research material. He also well used his political and scientific contacts. This paper will briefly describe the use of photographs by Dohrn and identify some of the protagonists among Dohrn’s staff members.
