Abstract

Brecht’s epic theatre works on a new form of anonymous subjectivity that challenges the logic of narcissism and recognition that was at the centre of the theatre he called ‘Aristotelian’. Epic theatre creates this different individuality by radically rethinking the position of the actor. This essay attempts to provide insights into this practice on the actor, its implications and its theoretical premises by discussing some central moments in the poetics of the Lehrstück.
