The study examines how the learning context (FL vs SL) influences the pragmatic development of refusals in Chinese learners of Italian. Using an oral DCT and a perceptual test with native judges, it compares strategies and communicative appropriateness. Results show that direct exposure promotes closer alignment with native pragmatic and relational norms.
