This essay examines some similes and metaphors documented in Hittite prayers and produces some insights into the process of translations and adaptation of Mesopotamian religious literature in Anatolia. Based on internal textual analysis, it is ascertained that the use of these rhetorical devices can in most cases be explained as motivated by aesthetic criteria; there are, however, also clear indications that they are a tool of persuasion aimed at ensuring effective communication between men and gods.
