Rethinking public spaces through waterfront regeneration
The subject of public spaces is one of the most debated and engaging in urban planning. Among the public spaces, those on the sea have a particular charm because they also allow the use of one of the most valuable natural resources that a city can enjoy. This awareness leads us to reflect with greater attention and intensity on their role and to the ways in which to achieve the quantitative and qualitative increase of these public spaces, paying attention to the protection and enhancement of the identity and landscape heritage, the development of sustainable mobility and the improvement of environmental components. In this context, the contribution proposes an analysis of the state of the art in the scientific literature on the subject through the study of two projects (one implemented and the other in progress) in the Municipality of Bari, one of the 14 Italian metropolitan cities which, through the European cohesion funds, is investing more in public spaces and on its waterfront. Having identified flexible and qualitative criteria more pertinent to the cases to be examined, some conclusions are proposed on the outcomes: in the first case of a project that has already been implemented and in the second of a project in the process of being tendered and implemented.
