Abstract

A SENTINEL 2A BASED APPROACH TO SUPPORT THE PLANNING
AND MONITORING OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURES
Abstract
The green infrastructure intended as networks of natural and semi-natural spaces capable of
maximizing these services promotes an integrated approach to land management. By
strengthening the green infrastructures, valuable landscapes can be maintained or created,
which form the basis of ecosystem services (SE) offered by the soil. There is a need to plan
the green infrastructures taking into account the spatial and temporal variability of the SEs
offered by the different types of land use. This work proposes a spatially explicit
methodology for supporting the planning and monitoring of green infrastructures, based on
the use of Sentinel 2a satellite images derived from the Copernicus Program. The
methodology, tested on the Region of Catalonia (Spain), showed the potential of using
about vegetation indices, integrated into a spatial decision support system, to guide the
planning of green infrastructures at the territorial and urban scale, and to monitor the “state
of health” of green infrastructure.
