Abstract

SHRINKING CITIES AND DE-GROWTH SCENARIOS. NOTES ON THE ITALIAN CASE

Since the early 2000s, urban shrinkage has been a common factor of transformation for many cities around the world; this continues to have consequences on built urban space, so the necessity for a change of paradigm in terms of thinking about urban transformation and intending the city of “tomorrow” becomes more urgent. Furthermore, the declared goal of containing urban growth has refocused attention on the importance of the (already) built city, bringing back attention to the existing building stock and its potential. Given the recognition of this condition, the contribution intends to investigate the specificity that de-growth
assumes in Italy and the impact that shrinkage has had and will have on the territorial systems, assessing the ability to cope with the ongoing revolution, outlining the roles that tradition and innovation may have in the long-run evolution prospects.
