Abstract

The public city as a driver of regeneration in the landscapes of the Phlegraean Fields

The present contribution investigates the role of public city within the layered landscapes of the Phlegraean Fields, a territory in which natural phenomena and anthropic processes are intertwined. In this context, public housing, which occupies a significant portion of the urbanized territory, takes on renewed importance and emerges as a strategic element in the reassembly of the fragmented landscape that characterizes the Phlegraean area. According to this hypothesis, the study offers a critical re-reading of the public heritage, analyzing its positional value in relation to the Phlegraean palimpsest and the ‘idea of the city’ underlying the original projects. Through design explorations, it also highlights the relational potential of public housing in redefining both tangible and conceptual connections between the public city and its territory. This process translates into the construction of a complex network of relationships, both material and immaterial, that evolves in a field of inquiry constantly redefined by interactions with historical, cultural, and landscape heritage. In this scenario, public housing neighbourhoods act as connectors between geographical spaces, archaeological landscapes, and agrarian landscapes, reestablishing the relationship with the territory. The identification of new centrality will enable the extraordinary morphology of the Phlegraean Fields to reclaim its role as a connective fabric between diverse focal points.
