Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the phenomenon of victim blaming, i.e., the attribution of blame to the victims, in the domain of gender violence. Reviewing the research literature on this topic with a particular focus on its meaning and functions, we will analyze the way by which the internalization of specific beliefs (i.e., rape myth) on violence and on victims’ characteristics concur to trigger, legitimate and perpetuate the phenomenon. Finally, we will discuss possible intervention’s strategies to fight against the phenomenon.
