Abstract

The paper examines the Roman guides printed between the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the following century with the aim of focusing the progressive shift from the travel report to the guide for modern travelers and isolating formal features and stylistic constants that can be considered characteristic of the periegetic genre. The essay proposes, with different methodological approaches, an analysis of the syntactic-textual, rhetorical-lexical and pragmatic expedients found in the Guida romana per li forastieri [Roman Guide for foreigners], contained in the Descrittione di Roma antica e moderna [Description of ancient and modern Rome] published by Domenico Franzini in 1643, and suggests a comparison with the previous one of 1563, appeared in Le cose maravigliose dell’alma città di Roma.
