Abstract

If in many respects Cesário Verde has been interpreted as a Lusophone Baudelaire, with the present study, we wish to highlight how his work goes beyond mere adherence to the prevailing fin de siècle European aesthetics, engaging significantly with the uniqueness of the Portuguese reality. His poetry, characterized by an aesthetic that transcends realism to unveil the darker, unsettling, and shocking dimension of reality, allows us to grasp the darker side of modernity, this ineffable time. At the same time, it provides an opportunity to delve deeper into Portuguese decadence.
