This text replies to the comments on and criticisms of my book The Donkey and the Boat by Fabio Saggioro, Andrea Augenti, Philippe Sénac, Giuseppe Petralia, and Sergio Tognetti. It seeks to develop discussions about, among other themes, the use of archaeological data for economic history and the main lines of medieval economic development.
