Abstract

This paper investigates the relationship between dioceses and minor centres in the medieval Italian Mezzogiorno. Building upon studies about the composition of the episcopal network, the research focuses on the data related to the fiscal impositions levied by episcopal mensae, dioceses, and the urban centres (both cities and minor centres) falling within their jurisdiction. The primary scope is to outline a picture of their economic ‘dimensions’ and to propose an interpretive model for the relationships between their respective wealth, with particular attention to smaller dioceses, whose main towns often do not align with the currently accepted definition of a city. The ultimate aim is to synthesize existing research and provide new foundations for future investigations into the dynamics between bishops, settlements and their reciprocal jurisdictions.
