The article comments on the volume Carlo IV nell’Italia del Trecento, edited by Daniela Rando and Eva Schlotheuber, from the perspective of a research project on the notaries and jurists in the entourage of Henry VII and their documentary production. It compares the visibility of the actions of the two Luxembourg rulers in Italy, examines their differing ‘personnel policies’ regarding the employment of Italian notaries, jurists, and advisers, and reflects on methodological issues inherent in person-centred historical research.
