Abstract

This study focuses on non-major dioceses in central Italy (Tuscany, Umbria, and the Marche), examining two specific types of settlement in relation to diocesan status. Firstly, it considers those population centres which, despite hosting a bishop’s residence, lacked the defining attributes of an urban entity, both in terms of demographic size and the ‘services’ available to the populace. Secondly, it addresses those settlements which were de facto cities, yet not de jure, as they did not function as a caput diocesis. For the former category, the designation of ‘minor dioceses’ is proposed, while the latter is classified under the phrase ‘small dioceses’.
