The contribution traces the historiographical events, the association with the word condomina and the different interpretations given to the word condoma by scholars. It then goes on to analyse this word, diachronically presenting the attestations in the sources between the 6th and 13th centuries and attempting to provide a precise definition to an elusive and often misunderstood lexeme. The aim of the work is to try to better understand its origin, meaning and semantic sphere, to grasp its nuances and place it in the right perspective for a more precise understanding of its context of use, especially in the centuries between Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
