Abstract

This article examines some passages from Dante’s Vita nova with the intention of enriching their meaning through a comparison with the Florentine statutory legislation on funerals. As a mirror of the urban and communal civilization that had come of age by Dante’s time, and which even up-to-date funeral rituals helped to define, the analysis of the municipal legislation on funerals offers some food for thought for understanding the literary text in relation to the historical and cultural context in which the poet lived.
