This paper focuses on the settlement patterns in the Po delta area of Comacchio from the 5th to the 10th century A.D. Our aim is to point out the nodal points of the demographic and economic development in the area, and to discuss some open questions and potential future research perspectives arisen in the context of the research project “Medieval Archaeology in Comacchio”, started in 2005. Particular attention will be dedicated to the interaction between the anthropic community and the natural environment.
