Abstract

This paper investigates the leases of the comitatus of Piacenza during Carolingian age (774-900). In the first section I considered the social profile of free peasants and their role in the rural society. Then I examined the structure of leases (cartula convenientia or petitio) during the Carolingian age and the changing forms and formulas in the eighth and ninth century (libellus, peditorio, cartula). Finally I concluded giving some general consideration on the leases of Piacenza and showing the importance of these documents for the history of rural society.
