Abstract

Sandro Carocci’s extensive study Signorie di Mezzogiorno (2014) encapsulates multiple interpretative views. Here, I will draw the attention to three aspects of his research which enable to project the analysis over the long term, through the early modern period. The first concerns the extension of fiscal power and how its management clearly shows the decisive role of the institutional framework which revolves around the regia camera della Sommaria (royal chamber of accounts). The second aspect is the exercise of justice which illustrates different situations ascribable less to an exclusive royal monopoly than to multiple jurisdictions, at times carried out by mandate. The third aspect concerns the forms of settlement and urban identity.
