Abstract

This short article summarizes the main topics that serve as a common thread of this mono- graphic dossier on female monasteries in Italian cities between the eighth and the eleventh cen- turies: the relationship of the abbesses and nuns with both lay (dukes, kings, local aristocracies) and ecclesiastical authorities, the feeble and arduous institutionalization of the monasteries, and (only for what concerns royal monasteries) how they displayed their self-image.
