Abstract

Since the study of Benoît-Michel Tock, the list of witnesses at the end of the eschatocol is analysed to study the role, the function of these individuals, and the charters’ writing process. This essay presents the investigation of the acts dated on the episcopate of Embert, Joseph, and Arbeo in the second half of the 8th century copied in the cartulary of Freising. Words, rituals, and a possible autography presented in charters will be studied to understand the action of the witness and try to define a community in the episcopate city of Freising.
