Abstract

The purpose of this study is a critical survey of the archaeological approaches used to re-build the history of Venice and the origins of settlements in the lagoon during the early Middle Age. The article deals with the history of the lagoon archaeology, its main methods and aims and, eventually, the obtained results. Different approaches have characterized the research, but the absence of a coherent scientific project still represents its weakness. The lagoon archaeology has been completely left at the margins in the international historical debate and kept following “traditional” or trivial interpretations, using overused “topos” (e.g. the “Byzantinity” or the wild origins). Archaeology has not been able to be autonomous and innovative in the historical debate. This study aims at shedding light on new perspectives of the lagoon archaeology: the need of archaeologically oriented project (or projects); the need of freeing from pre-built interpretative paradigma and the need of contextualize the Venetian lagoon history (and the birth of Venice) in a wider geographical framework, namely the North Adriatic one.
