Focus and Scope

Schola Salernitana - Annali (SSA) publishes scientific works related to medieval history and historiography of the South of Italy and the Mediterranean area. Philosophical, archaeological, anthropological studies and essays about culture and textual tradition history are also welcomed according to a multidisciplinary view. Starting from the current issue, SSA is exclusively published on-line.

Peer Review Process

Submitted articles are preliminarily examined by the members of the Scientific Direction (co-Editors); if contributions are suitable to be edited, they will be processed through “double blind” peer review. Therefore, articles are submitted to at least two qualified anonymous referees chosen from SSA Referee Board or among the members of the Scientific Committee.

The work will be submitted to a third anonymous referee, in case of contrasting judgments.

‘On request’ contributions are not subject to the reviewing process and will be marked by a special note.

Publication Frequency

Schola Salernitana – Annali is issued once a year.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides open access to its contents on the principle that public and freely available research to the public supports a larger global exchange of knowledge.

SSA does not charges any fee to the authors for submitting an article or for its review and publication (no-APC).

Works are published  under the Creative Commons Attribution Licence 4.0 International - CC BY 4.0. This license allows to copy, distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works and remixes based on it only if they give evidence of the work's authorship, providing appropriate indication of the name of the author and the title of the journal.

Code of Ethics

Duties of the Director, the editors of the individual files of the Scientific Committee and the Editorial Board

The Directive Committee is responsible for the decision of publishing the articles submitted to  SSA according to the thematic lines of the journal.

The Directive Committee has the support of at least of two reviewers chosen among scholars from the Referees Board or selected among the Scientific Committee

The submitted works are evaluated for their scientific content, regardless of gender, race, ethnic origin, citizenship, religious belief, political and sexual orientation of the authors 
It is forbidden for the Directive Committee, the Scientific Committee and the Secretarial Staff  to use information contained in the submitted work  without the written consent of the author.

The Scientific Committee has consultative and advisory functions; it  supports the Direction Committee about themes and orientation of SSA and it is committed to promoting activities aimed at the enhancement of the journal.

The Directive Committee, the Scientific Committee and the Secretarial Staff are bound by reserve. No information on the articles received may be divulged to anyone other than the authors and reviewers.

Duties of referees

The selected referees, who can not edit the works on time or do not feel sufficiently qualified for revising the assigned work, must inform the Direction Committee immediately.

The selected referees have to treat the submissions for review as confidential documents and they can not use the included information for personal benefit.

The referees must objectively review the works and they are required to give adequate reasons for their judgment, and, if necessary, to suggest further bibliographic references  and textual corrections to the authors. 

The referees should inform the Director if they find substantial similarities or overlaps between the work considered and any other published paper which they are aware of.

The referees must not accept assignments if they have conflicts of interest caused by previous competitive relationships, collaboration, or any other type of connection with the author.

Rights and duties of the authors

Authors must ensure the originality of their works and they must indicate all the bibliographic references used for the work.

The work or study must not be submitted for publication at the same time to other journals also if they are licensed with special restricted rights.

Authors retain the copyright of their contribution with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license – CC BY 4.0 and allowing anyone "to reproduce, distribute, communicate to the public, publicly display, perform, and perform the work", with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship (mentioning clearly the author’s name and the title of the journal).

The author must comply with the editorial guidelines of SSA.

Authors have to declare that there are no conflicts of interest that may have influenced the results and interpretation of the submitted work. All sources of financial support to the research project must be indicated.

Correction of published articles

Any modifications or corrections to articles already published are only allowed in exceptional cases, and always with a note provided on the article's publication page.

Plagiaism Policy

All articles submitted to SSA will be checked to detect plagiarism, also using software such as CompilatioTurnitin or iThenticate.
A specific process is followed to manage a case of plagiarism.
SSA follows the guidelines contained in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) flowcharts (http://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts).
In the case of suspected plagiarism in a published article:

1) The person who advised RM Journal of the situation is informed about the process to be followed.
2) The contributions are compared to check the degree of copying.
3) All Editors of SSA are informed and asked for their comments.
4) The author of the article in question is contacted with documentary evidence of the case of plagiarism and is asked for a response.

If the author is found guilty of plagiarism, administrators of SSA:

1) warn the editor of the journal/series in which the original plagiarised contribution was published and the authors of the plagiarised article/book;
2) publish an official retraction of the paper;
3) withdrawn the article from the SSA Journal site;
4) will not publish any article of the author concerned for a period of 5 years.

Management of post publication iussues

The Journal publishes articles on topics previously addressed in earlier contributions in order to further develop the debate on that subject.

Consent and Privacy Policy

The data collected from registered and non-registered users of this journal falls within the scope of the standard functioning of peer-reviewed journals. It includes information that makes communication possible for the editorial process; it is used to informs readers about the authorship and editing of content; it enables collecting aggregated data on readership behaviors, as well as tracking geopolitical and social elements of scholarly communication.

This journal’s editorial team uses this data to guide its work in publishing and improving this journal. Data that will assist in developing this publishing platform may be shared with its developer Public Knowledge Project in an anonymized and aggregated form, with appropriate exceptions such as article metrics. The data will not be sold by this journal or PKP nor will it be used for purposes other than those stated here. 

The authors published in this journal are responsible for the human subject data that figures in the research reported here.

Those involved in editing this journal seek to be compliant with industry standards for data privacy, including the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for “data subject rights” that include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) the right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design. 

The GDPR also allows for the recognition of “the public interest in the availability of the data,” which has a particular saliency for those involved in maintaining, with the greatest integrity possible, the public record of scholarly publishing.
