Una nuova epigrafe ebraica da una sinagoga di Trani

Abstract

Nel giugno 2025 si è appreso che durante i lavori di restauro di un edificio nell'antico quartiere medievale di Trani è stata scoperta un'iscrizione ebraica. L'epigrafe presenta un'elegante iscrizione in caratteri ebraici, è datata all'anno 4880 (1119/1120 d.C.) e può quindi essere considerata una delle testimonianze più antiche e significative della presenza ebraica nella Puglia medievale. Il testo, sebbene parzialmente conservato, permette di comprendere la funzione dell'epigrafe e di collocarla in un contesto sinagogale.

A new Jewish epigraph from a synagogue in Trani

In June 2025, knowledge was gained that a Hebrew inscription had been discovered during the restoration of a building in the ancient medieval quarter of Trani. The epigraph features an elegant inscription in Hebrew script; it is dated to the year 4880 (1119/1120 CE) and can, therefore, be considered one of the most ancient and significant testimonies of the Jewish presence in medieval Puglia. The text, although partially preserved, allows us to understand the function of the epigraph and to assign it to a synagogue context.
