Abstract

The Jewish presence in medieval Abruzzi

The essay examines the documentation concerning the Jewish presence in the Abruzzi region, starting from early, uncertain attestations. It then goes on to illustrate the different phases of Jewish immigration in the area and its subsequent growth from the end of the 14th century onwards. Consequently, it seeks to reconstruct the geography of their arrivals, outlining the role played both by Jewish families and individuals in the framework of the local economy. It also analyzes the relationship between the Jews and the rest of the Christian society as well between the Jews and the various ruling powers in Southern Italy, highlighting the course of these encounters until the final expulsion of Jews from the region in 1541.
