Abstract

The Jewish Catacombs of Venosa between History and Documents (1853-1984)

Through a survey of the documents in the Venosa municipal archives, this article investigates on the circumstances in which the Jewish catacombs were found in 1853, and how they became of public property. As it has been already pointed out by G. Lacerenza in a study of 1998, many aspects of the discovery are still unclear and, among these, the role of inspector Luigi Rapolla. An examination of a number of documents issued between the 19th and the 20th centuries, details how the catacombs became gradually appreciated by the national and international scientific community, and how, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Cesare Colafemmina, the area was eventually acquired, in 1984, by the City of Venosa estate property.
