Abstract

The necropolis of Girifalco: first archaeological discoveries

In September of 2014, an archaeological excavation campaign by the local headquarters of the Archeoclub of Girifalco under the scientific direction of the Archaeological Superintendence of Calabria took place at the San Vincenzo locality, in the Municipality of Girifalco in the Catanzaro Province. During the excavations some masonry structures emerged and soon thereafter the remains of a necropolis, including five burials, all made within masonry boxes in trenches aligned along an East-West orientation. Within each burial, the remains of funerary equipment were found. In addition, some of the clay slabs used in the tomb walls had been marked with symbols identified as menoroth, either with five branches or, in one example, with seven. The Superintendence presented the excavations in a public conference on 21 October 2014 and dated the site to the 6th century.
