Abstract

Jews in Gimigliano: notes for a research study

Gimigliano is a village consisting of 3.000 inhabitants and situated 18 kilometers away from Catanzaro. The village is divided into two separate areas, Gimigliano Superiore and Gimigliano Inferiore, positioned on different altitudes: the latter standing at 509 meters above sea level, and the former ‒ which is wider and counts more inhabitants ‒ at a height of 618 meters. The paper aims to recover the sources that mention a Jewish presence in Gimigliano between the 10th and 15th centuries. Some toponyms possibly recalling a Jewish settlement in the village surroundings are also examined.
