Abstract

On the recipients of Šabbeṯay Donnolo’s Sefer ha-mirqaḥôṯ

The Sefer ha-mirqaḥôṯ, or Sefer ha-yaqar, was part of a separate and more structured and extensive medical treatise that has not come down to us. The remaining part is sufficient, however, to lead us to believe that the latter was representative of the medical-pharmacological culture of the ancient, late antique and early medieval world that had developed between the West and the Middle East as a result of the distillation of experiences deriving from fifteen centuries of experimentation, applications, and corrections. In light of the considerations subject to assessment in this essay, one wonders whether it would not be more prudent to define the Sefer ha-mirqaḥôṯ as a Hebrew-language fragmentary redaction of an unaccounted for pharmacological work.
