Abstract

Ernest Renan wrote that “the desert is monotheistic”, pointing out the metaphysical value of a space outside of time, irreducible to the measure of man, whose immense solitudes thin the self in its essential traits, giving way to identity adventures as attractive as they are dangerous. Long neglected, the crossing of the desert is among the most relevant themes in contemporary literature, confronting the book of Exodus in various ways. The essay aims to examine the reconfiguration of this intertextual pattern in the works of Edmond Jabès and Bruce Chatwin, who were able to make the figure of the nomad a central myth in the literary imagination.
