The Shakespearian sublime and Freudian sublimation in Verdi and Boito’s “Otello”

Abstract

The article focuses on the techniques of appropriation used by Arrigo Boito while writing the libretto of Verdi’s Otello. By way of a sustained comparison between Boito’s libretto, the original Shakespearian text and the then available major traslations in Italian and in French, the article especially investigates the processes of condensation and coinage used by Boito and employs the Freudian notion of the sublimation of Eros as a way of assessing the changes.

Rocco Coronato insegna Letteratura Inglese presso l’Università di Padova.
