Abstract

This article deals with the Italian translations of the Kalevala published in the first decade of the 20th century by Igino Cocchi (1902-1909), Paolo Emilio Pavolini (1909) and Francesco di Silvestri-Falconieri (1912), and with the translation attempts made at the end of the previous century by Domenico Ciampoli (1890). The originality of this essay lies in the point of view taken: the discussions on the meter to be adopted, the rivalries between different translators, the shrewd review policy and the wide network of relationships established by some of the translators are investigated through the lens of the unpublished correspondence by Domenico Comparetti, Oiva Johannes Tuulio, Werner Söderhjelm, Arthur Långfors and other scholars and journalists of the period in question.

Author Biography

Enrico Garavelli, University of Helsinki

Enrico Garavelli is Senior Lecturer and Docent of Italian Philology at the University of Helsinki. His research centres on the Italian literature of the 16th and early 19th centuries, the history of religious dissent, studies on epistolarity and the history of Italian studies. He has published a number of critical editions (A. Caro, Amori pastorali; P. Aretino, Talanta; L. Domenichi, Libro del fuggir le superstizioni; L. Castelvetro, Letters; L. Domenichi, Letters ). He is also the author of a monograph on the history of Italian studies in Finland (Minima Borealia, 2018). He is Vice-president of the Linguistics division of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. Moreover, he is a member of many scientific communities, such as Cinquecento Plurale, Co.Co.La.C., C.R.E.S, Osservatorio A. Caro of Civitanova Marche.
