Abstract

English article title: Muna, or the other half of writing: Translating Terézia Mora. A conversation with Daria Biagi

Terézia Mora’s (b. 1971) latest novel, Muna oder die Hälfte des Lebens (2023), was nominated for the Deutscher Buchpreis 2023 and marks the beginning of a planned trilogy exploring various facets of womanhood. The German-Hungarian author is widely recognized as one of the most original voices in early 21st-century fiction. Her work is nowgaining increased visibility in Italy, thanks to Daria Biagi’s (b. 1983) Italian translation, which has been shortlisted for the 2025 Premio Strega for best translation. This article is divided into two parts: the first offers a critical review of the novel, while the second presents an interview with Biagi, focusing on her long-standing collaboration with Mora. The discussion includes references to Biagi’s previous translation of Mora’s short story collection Liebe unter Aliens, and touches on Mora’s own experience as a translator from Hungarian into German. This dialogue continues the novel’s exploration of Identität, and highlights the importance of a dialogical approach to literature, translation, and life itself.
