Abstract

The Regional Landscape Plan is the tool that regulates the territory where conservation and preservation are linked in a single project for the safekeeping of the landscape with the objective of preserving the more important remains and encouraging the restoration of the remains in those areas where the landscape has been seriously degraded and endangered. The landscape of this area going from the coastal part varies and changes aspect as one goes on towards the inland plateau where the landscape of citrus fruit orchards and olive tree groves is mixed in with the cultivated inland hillside. The settlements consist mainly in rural villages and date back to the period of the re-population of inland Sicily (end of the 15th century to the middle of the 18th century). Numerous traces of pre-historic human settlements and of early Greek colonization enrich this territory which is accentuated by its rugged nature.
