Abstract

The research experience here presented aims at dealing with the waterfront regeneration issues in urban environment, by combining a twofold approach: the coastal area protection and valorisation through a pro-active compatible use on the one hand and a management model based on a bottom up procedure of civic activation and public-private-partnerships, on the other hand.
In order to start a fieldwork for collecting evidences, a purposely-selected case study has been developed: the marine protected area of Gaiola in Naples (IT). The case offers the opportunity of addressing potentialities and obstacles of a process managed by a group of scholars and activists whose topic is to protect the heritage challenged by abandonment and decay and to disseminate the awareness regards the immaterial and material values of the area.
The results of the initiative, developed since 2002, could be considered the starting point for developing a civic activation process oriented to the waterfront regeneration.
