Abstract

Birth as a creative and complex act is still completely underestimated and undervalued. Maternity hospitals and wards are based on obsolete design guidelines. Organization is everything, personal efficiency is a priority and leads to depersonalization for mother to be. We want to open doors by including feminist theories and gender issues in this hidden, but very important aspect of women lives. We analyze hospital and medical processes and relate women´s needs to physical spaces. We are putting into practice our theories about empowering spaces for a very special and vulnerable group of persons: birthing women.
