Abstract

This contribution discusses Patrick Geary’s book on the role of genetics in rewriting the history of the Early Middle Ages. It focuses on the emergence of archaeogenetics, the risks of biological essentialism, and the experience of HistoGenes. The project’s results show that genetic ancestry, cultural similarity, and ethnic labels do not necessarily coincide. Their relationship must therefore be assessed case by case by integrating genetic, archaeological, and written evidence in the study of population history in East-Central Europe.
