Abstract

The monographic section brings together four studies on diplomatic practices in the Eastern Mediterranean between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, approaching the region as a laboratory for the development of late medieval diplomacy. Focusing on different political contexts – the Venetian colony of Crete, the Timurid Empire, the Mamluk Sultanate, and the Ottoman Sultanate – the contributions highlight the circulation and interaction of practices of representation, negotiation, and mediation. Taken together, they show that the distinction between official and informal diplomacy was far more fluid, especially in frontier contexts, than traditional categories have generally assumed.
