Abstract

The article examines the diplomatic practices developed by the Italian powers in their relations with the Ottoman Sultanate after the fall of Constantinople (1453). Drawing on a comparative analysis of a wide range of Italian sources, the study highlights the experimental character of this diplomacy, shaped by the disinformation, the overlap between crusading projects and commercial interests, and the coexistence of official and informal forms of negotiation. Particular attention is devoted to diplomatic actors, ceremonial practices, cross-cultural misunderstandings, the Ottoman response, and the interaction between political centres, frontier communities, and transregional networks, thereby illustrating the different strategies adopted by the major Italian powers.
